Sustainability Beyond Candles:
Candle Holders and Accessories Made With Love
We have so much to celebrate in our Greentree Home community this year. This autumn comes with a particularly special announcement. We are beginning to expand our offerings beyond candles into candle holders and accessories. Currently, we offer the practical Iron Holders, as stunning as they are sturdy. Now, after searching far and wide for artisan-centered businesses that match our company values of sustainability, we decided on three very special holders and two candle accessories that delight in both design and integrity.
Our first two additions to the Greentree Home candle holder collection come from an exciting new partnership with a rainforest community in Guatemala. Our Petén holders are crafted using local hardwoods Mahogany and Granadillo. Well known for their durability, both woods are highly sought after for their resistance to elements such as water and heat. Mahogany is such a special wood that illegal mahogany logging continues across the Americas to this day. Despite the persistance of deforestation, we know it is possible to harvest trees while taking care of the forest in return. This care starts with following indigenous practices and wisdom on how we relate to our environment – harvesting with mindfulness and gratitude (carefully selecting local materials and respecting local ecosystems in the process), taking only what we need (not getting greedy with resources!), and giving back just as much or more than what we choose to take (for example, reforestation). Sustainability is our highest concern at Greentree Home and we are grateful to be in partnership with communities actively practicing reforestation in the Petén Rainforest. You too can be part of preserving this rainforest by ordering a pair of stylish candle holders directly from the Petén. Starting this October, our collection will include wooden holders in two distinct styles, the Cylinder and the Saucer.
Alongside our Petén Saucer and Cylinder Holders, we are thrilled to launch limited sets of Portugese ceramic candle holders produced in a zero-waste facility where all water, clay shavings and broken ceramic pieces are repurposed into original designs. Thanks to our longtime partner, Fable, we will be offering exclusive access to these traditional crafts sourced directly from the Ribatejo. In Lisbon, Portugal, the River Tejo empties out into the Atlantic Ocean after traveling over 1,000 kilometers across the Iberian Peninsula. This Ribatejo, as the river valley is locally known, is a rich ecosystem full of culture, history, flora and fauna. One of the abundant resources in the earth there is clay. Ceramic artisans in the region work with clay from these river banks to craft the scrumptuous new candle holders we have selected for our collection. Before firing, these organically shaped pieces are delicately painted in a light glaze that allows speckles of stoneware clay to emerge onto the surface. The resulting texture and look is as subtle and comforting as vanilla ice cream – you know, a full-bodied, creamy white sprinkled with tiny black specks of vanilla bean. The small Fable Holders are also available in dove gray, a subtle, dreamy tone. Explore our Fable Stoneware Holders in two sizes here.
Finally, our autumn drop of fresh goodies would not be complete without one more candle accessory…a most necessary accessory: matches! What else would you reach for to light your new candles? We are excited to introduce our Garden Matchboxes, featuring vintage inspired prints that celebrate all sorts of garden delights. These endearing matchboxes draw from an array of inspirations, such as old flower seed catalogues and textiles prints, to present five unique illustrations and colorways. The matches inside the boxes are just as impressive. Stretching four inches long, each match grants ample time to light a dozen candles (or more!). Meant for ritual candle lightings such as sacred ceremonies and momentous events, breaking out these matches in front of a crowd only adds to the allure of our colorful tapers and sculptural designs. As a small, women-led candle company committed to reducing waste and mindfully engaging with natural resources, we are proud to offer this alternative to disposable, plastic lighters – wooden matches that are both sustainable and beautiful.
We are happy to offer a classic pewter candlesnuffer. Handmade in Rhode Island by Beehive Handmade, an American company who design and produce meaningful gifts for life's milestones and craft classic home goods for everyday celebrations. Each snuffer comes nested in a sweet gift box.
The hexagonal design celebrates geometry and the industrious honey bee. The candlesnuffer is a perfect gift for all the candle lovers in your life.
